Highway Patrol releases details on fatal accident on 33

The Ohio State Highway Patrol released details from this morning's fatal crash on 33 which shutdown traffic early Wednesday morning.

Troopers report that around 6:00 a.m. Lacy Smith, 56 of Powell, was driving his Toyota Tundra west bound on 33 when he lost control due to the icy conditions.  The Tundra then crossed the snow covered median and entered the east bound lanes when it was struck by a Mack semi-tractor/trailer.  Upon impact Smith was ejected from his vehicle and both vehicles caught fire.  The semi was driven by David Oen of Saint Mary's.

Lacy Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.  Oen was transported to the Miami Valley Hospital and is listed in serious condition.

The crash is still under investigation.

The Logan County Sheriff's Office, the Allen Township Fire Department and Logan County ODOT all reported to scene with the Highway Patrol.

The east bound lanes on 33 were shutdown for nearly eight hours Wednesday before reopening around 2:00 p.m.  West bound lanes were closed for about ninety minutes.

The weather made matters worse on 33 Wednesday morning.  Several other cars slid off 33 Wednesday morning with no other injuries reported.  News tippers reported a jack-knifed semi near the Honda Parkway.  Details on that accident have not been made available at this time.
