Sobriety checkpoint leads to OVI arrest, open container charge

The Marysville Post of the State Highway Patrol, Bellefontaine Police Department, and Logan County Sheriff’s Office combined efforts during a sobriety checkpoint on South Main Street near Lake Avenue (near the Logan County Fairgrounds) Friday from 8 p.m. to midnight.

847 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. One driver was arrested for OVI and another driver was cited for open container.

Crash statistics for the past three years indicate there have been 64 crashes in Logan County that involved impaired drivers within a three-mile radius of the checkpoint area. Out of those crashes, 3 were alcohol-related fatalities and 20 were injury crashes.

Multi-agency sobriety checkpoints illustrate law enforcement agency's unified front in deterring and combating impaired driving. The participating law enforcement agencies consider this checkpoint a success. Awareness and education are the first line of defense against impaired driving.

Law enforcement agencies remind us to buckle up and do not drink and drive.
